There is a mindset in our modern-day culture that what you want is owed to you, that it belongs to you, or that you are entitled to it. This entitlement stretches into every part of our lives. We believe the world owes us the decency of catering to our every whim and desire; we believe that we are the most important thing to ever happen to this world and we get upset if we aren't treated as such.
The mindset, everything is owed me and I matter more than anyone else is destroying us from the inside out. We have become so selfish and self-centered, everything must cater to us, but the problem with that is everyone else has that view as well. When everyone thinks that everything is owed to them, who is left to fulfill their self-centered desires? I look out for me and what you may want or is insignificant.
We are often unaware this is our mindset, we say, "That isn't me, I look after and help those around me, I'm socially aware of those in need who I come in contact with." This may be true yes, but what is your heart like while you help those around you? I was recently watching a television show and in the show, this statement was made, "Even in your generosity, you are selfish." Are the things you do to help people only done in hopes people will see you doing them, to further your social status, because they are required of you or expected, or are they done with a genuine spirit that is not self-seeking? When was the last time you could say, I did this for someone and I got nothing out of it? That statement in itself is self-seeking a little. It is boastful.
I think we as humans have a hard time with this concept because we are self-centered. It is human nature - but there was one man, who in this world, was able to accomplish all of this, and the good news if we know this man we can live a little differently in this world. If we truly know Him, we won't be like everyone else, yes we will still be human, but we will have a radically different outlook on this world. Our value system will shift and we will no longer think that this world owes us anything because we will know that we owe everything to Him and that we could never deserve anything.
If for some reason, you have no idea what I am talking about, I encourage you to find out for yourself who this man is; don't take my word or anyone else's - find out for yourself:
"The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you." - John 15:9
